What is Fangirling? For those who don't know-fangirling is when a fangirl (or fanboy) "Literally can't even" or “is just going to DIE” or even at times lets out a stream of profanities that would make a trucker blush. We may be the most shy, tranquil people of all time and yet if we see a new promo for one of our shows, a movie we've seen a million and five times and or really anything that has anything to do even a little tiny bit to do with one of our fandoms and you will find yourself staring at a hyperactive, passionate, obsessive semblances of a human being capable of producing pterodactyl-like screams. Much like a Time Lord, fangirls (and again, fanboys) have more than one heart. Our first heart is much like your own. It pumps blood throughout our body keeping our muscles oxygenated. Our second heart is more like the glowing hearts Regina, Cora and Rumpelstiltskin rip out of people’s bodies in the amazingly fantastic ABC TV series Once Upon a Time. Our second heart controls our fangirling. It beats twenty times harder than a normal heart and gives us what can only be described as heart palpitations and enlarging and shrinking sensations the moment any of our ships kiss, express their undying love, die, appear to die or really do ANYTHING. It controls our emotional center, and while Psychopaths have no conscious or much emotion whatsoever, fangirls are the opposite. We have TOO MUCH emotion. It overtakes our bodies. It overtakes our SOULS. It makes us melodramatic, freakish, barely human fanatic.

I didn't ever make a conscious decision to become a fangirl. The fangirl life knocked on my door and told me I was a wizard. True story. Hagrid knocked down that cottage door and I never looked back. I was 6 years old. I had been reading Mary Kate and Ashley books and telling my brother all about them and he was furious. He was sick of hearing about my 'girl books'. So he made me read Harry Potter. And my life was never the same. They say Harry Potter is the gateway fandom. Well if the Potterhead community is like a bunch of people on Marijuana then I have moved on to the really bad drugs of nerdiness. First it was The best TV show ever. Once Upon a Time. My Need to Nerd was sated for some time in the world of fairy tales and drama on ABC. I still watch it faithfully every Sunday. It is an addiction and hiatus season is painful and creates what I can only describe as painful withdrawal symptoms lessened only by manic writing of fanfiction. (See To Pay a Debt and August in December.) I dabbled in fandoms here and there from ABC's Castle to reality TV shows. But experimenting in fandoms isn't the same as getting hit hard by the fangirl heart. My next hit was when my friends forced me to discover Doctor Who. Nine took Rose's hand and said "Run" and that was it. I was done. I was ready to follow the Doctor anywhere. I binged Doctor who for almost half a year to catch up on the reboot. Now I await painfully for Moffat to get off his ass and get more episodes out ASAHOTP (as soon as humanly or time-lordly possible). Along with the After Davis left Who, I was very sad. Moffat is great but he's not Davis. Unless we are talking about Sherlock-my next fandom. Davis will always be my king of Doctor Who but Moffat kicks ASS at writing Sherlock. I NEED more episodes damn it! I deserve them! Of course once my friends got me into Doctor Who and Sherlock, they thought they could tell me to watch anything and I would. Okay so they were correct. But Becoming a Trekkie was worth it. I am beginning my journey down Star Trek world and it is a thing of beauty. So far I've seen the new movies and I am starting in on Next Generation and I LOVE it. I LOVE IT. What I am trying to say is that I am a fangirl. And once you start in on the nerdiness, you have to continue down the road, deeper and deeper into the woods. (Which would be the perfect transition into my love of Broadway shows but sadly I don't have space here so that will be saved for another post.) There is also no space to discuss my complete obsession with Game of Thrones. George RR Martin puts enough story into his books that he deserves an entire post to himself. Which is what I will give him. Possibly per character. If you are dipping your toe into our world don't be scared. You may not end up like me. Or you might. But don't worry. I'm awesome. So jump on into the nerd pool. We are welcoming, crazy, and will love you (as long as you support our ships). Jump in. And be awesome. |
AuthorI'm Elsa Byrd. If I could make money being a fangirl I would be incredibly rich. I hope you enjoy my fangirly thoughts and ideas! ArchivesCategories |
